autobiography
“Please take out your math books and turn to page 10.” This was me at six years old playing school with my two younger brothers. “That’s right 1 +1=2! Good thinking! Now let’s go to the chalk board and practice writing the alphabet!” Our dramatic play “school house” had good attendance throughout my elementary school years. I was always the teacher and my brothers were always the students. The arrangement worked perfectly for everyone because they liked being the students, and I liked being the teacher. Not to mention the fact that my parents appreciated the extra tutoring for my brothers.
I began babysitting when I was twelve, and I quickly had babysitting jobs lined up for months in advance. I was a high achiever all through junior high and high school and thrived on going from activity to activity. I was involved in basketball, track, cross country, National Honor Society, Future Business Leaders of America, Art Club, community volunteering, church activities, and I served as the President of Future Homemakers of America. I also began working at the age of fifteen at our local produce store and was promoted several times throughout the years. When my family and I moved away three years later, I had advanced to the position of front-end manager. During my senior year, I really hit the college scholarship applications hard—applying for anything I could get my hands on. My hard work paid off, and I received the most scholarships out of anyone in my entire graduating class of over 500 students.
As I eagerly began school at Northwest Nazarene College for my business degree with an emphasis in graphic design, the dean took notice of the number of scholarships I had received, of my academic record, and of my placement in a unique college honors English program. I was asked for an interview for an article about my accomplishments in the monthly college magazine. During my first year of college, I worked two jobs, one at a restaurant and one at a graphic design studio, and also met and started dating my husband.
We were married in 1996, and shortly thereafter, I entered the workforce as an interior decorator. In 2000 our first son was born. What a joyous day! The blessings kept coming, in 2002 another boy arrived, in 2004 another boy and finally in 2008 our baby girl decided to join our family! During these years, I provided child care for multiple families, some out of my home and some out of their home. For one family in particular, I worked as an in-home nanny to their two children for seven years. I was also the scheduler for the Ft Collins School District before and after school care program for seven years.
Community volunteering has always been a huge part of my life. I have volunteered on a regular basis in assisted living facilities in many different capacities, participated in soup kitchen activities, graffiti clean-up teams, church volunteering activities, and the UW-Platteville Host Family program for Chinese exchange students. I also was elected to the school board at Knowledge Quest Academy in Milliken, CO, and served a two-year term. Additionally, I have been teaching Sunday school since 2002, and the ages have included eighteen months, nine years, eleven years, twelve years, youth, and adults. Additionally, I served as the 1st Counselor in the Primary Presidency at our church for two years.
In 2004 our oldest son was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes, and my husband and I were launched into the medical world. He has done extremely well through the years, and with the incredible rise in diabetes in children, I am eager to be a comfort to children and parents who are going through similar challenges, who I will no doubt meet in my educational profession.
In 2009 it became obvious to me that I strongly desired to pursue a degree in education at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. After attending for a year I decided to finish the graphic design degree that I had started as well. I am majoring in elementary education, art education, and graphic design with minors in early childhood education, special education inclusion, English education, and imaging media. After teaching for a few years, I plan to pursue a master’s degree in education administration. I currently serve as the president of the Iota Rho chapter of Kappa Delta Pi, International Honor Society in Education. In October of 2013 our chapter received an international award for chapter excellence, and I received an international award for outstanding chapter officers. I am also a member of Phi Kappa Phi, Student Wisconsin Education Association, Pioneer Advertising Federation, and I work at the UW-Platteville Children’s Center as an office assistant and teacher assistant.
My husband and I were blessed and surprised in 2010 to hear the news that we would be having another baby! Our little boy was born in October of 2010. We thoroughly enjoy our five precious children. They keep us very busy, to say the least, and make life worthwhile and interesting.
I will graduate in May of 2015 with my bachelor of science in elementary education and art education and then will return for one semester to complete my bachelor of art in graphic design in December of 2015.
All of these experiences have molded me into a strong, organized, artistic, caring, empathetic, hardworking, multi-tasker with the ability to put things into perspective and prioritize. They have provided me with life-long experiences that I will always treasure. Children are my passion. They are our future. To me, they are the most precious beings on this earth and deserve to be nurtured, loved, respected, and taught.
